Once, one of my grandpa bought a masal vadai in Chidambaram. It was as big as our palm size and had lots of onion and veggies too like carrot,peas. Chana dal vada or Masala vada is a popular South Indian tea time snack made with chana dal, spices, onions & herbs. It is also a street food & most commonly served in tiffin centers as a evening snack with a chutney.

The ingredients needed to make Masal vadai:
  1. Get 3/4 cup tuvar dal
  2. Get 1/5 cup chana dal
  3. Make ready 1 pinch asafoetida
  4. Make ready 1 tsp ginger
  5. Prepare 2 garlic cloves
  6. Take 1 tsp salt
  7. Prepare 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
  8. Prepare 1 cinnamon stick
  9. Prepare 1 clove
  10. Take 2 green chillies
  11. Prepare 3 red chillies
  12. Get 1/2 onion finely chopped
  13. Make ready 1 tsp coriander leaves finely chopped
  14. Make ready 1 tsp curry leaves finely chopped
  15. Prepare 1 tbsp rice flour
  16. Prepare as needed Oil for deep frying

Instructions to make Masal vadai:
  1. Wash and soak tuvar dal and chana dal for 2 hrs
  2. After two hours drain the water and keep it aside
  3. In a mixer jar put clove cinnamon asafoetida salt ginger garlic fennel seeds green chillies and red chillies. Grind a little
  4. Then add thoor dall, chana dall and grind together to a coarse
  5. Transfer this to a bowl. Then add chopped onion coriander leaves, curry leaves and rice flour. Mix well
  6. Heat oil in a pan for deep frying. Then take a small lemon size of this mixture.
  7. Place it on the palm and press to make it flat and put it in the oil. When the color turns golden brown flip it and fry the other side.
  8. Remove it from the oil when it's done. Repeat the same process for the remaining mixture.
  9. Crispy outside and soft inside a tasty masala vadai is ready to plate
